Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW) & Special Watersheds

A number of the Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW) and Special Watershed stormwater programs are overseen by the NC Division of Water Resources rather than NCDEMLR's Stormwater Permitting Program.  However, they are also listed here so that the Stormwater Permitting Page can provide a complete picture of stormwater management in our state.

Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW)

Nutrient Sensitive Waters (NSW) is a supplemental classification intended for waters needing additional nutrient management due to being subject to excessive growth of microscopic or macroscopic vegetation.  For some waters classified as NSW in North Carolina, DENR has developed NSW stormwater programs for the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins.  More information on these programs is available below.

Special Watershed Programs

At present, there are three major special watershed programs in our state at present.  The Jordan and Falls Lake Nutrient Management Strategies were created to address specific nutrient loading issues to protect these resources as water supplies and recreational areas.  The Goose Creek watershed in the Yadkin Pee-Dee River Basin provides habitat for the federally endangered Carolina heelsplitter (Lasmigona decorata). The Goose Creek stormwater program also applies to Sixmile and Waxhaw Creeks.  For more information, see the links below.
